Trains are available from Sydney to Singleton (the station closest to the Hunter Valley town) however the wineries and vineyards are 30 minutes away from the main wine tasting areas such as Pokolbin and Cessnock. Bus services (do check the frequency) are also available from Singleton that will take you to Cessnock and from there a taxi ride into the Hunter Valley region.

Opal cards are used for travel costs on public transport in New South Wales simply by tapping on and off at entry/exit gates. For those who do not have an Opal card, single or return tickets can be purchased at ticket machines located inside the station.

NOTE: Even though train services are available you do need to consider getting around the wineries and vineyards when you’re there.
