If you are traveling between Dubai International Airport and Downtown Dubai, the Metro is the best option for you. The 14 kilometer (9 miles) Metro can take as long as 40 minutes for you to get to Downtown Dubai.
To use the Dubai Metro, you will need to purchase a Jannah card. To buy one, make a purchase at the Airside terminal, leave your passport and boarding pass in the secure box, and then head to the additional collection box.
The fares are AED2.50, which equates to $0.70 USD. To see if you are eligible for free transfers from bus to Metro, have a look at the list of stations and see if any have “Available” stickers.
For many travelers, public transportation is the best choice. Just like the metro, the metrobus (or the underground railway) offers easy access to your accommodation. Short Stops: You can stop off at a few short stops on the Skyway for easy connections to Emirates Terminal 3, The World, Concourses A and B, and the north-eastern bus station.
The stops are Emirates Terminal 3 (To Dubai Mall) located at the airport exit, just off to your right.
FlyAway Bus: This is like a taxi or a light rail, except it is faster and you don’t have to deal with drivers trying to drive down the bus lane. You can choose from three routes that take about 5 minutes each where they all go through the city centre.
Subway: Most visitors will take the subway to get from the airport to downtown Dubai. You can download an EZ-Link card from Dubai’s official tourism website to pay for travel on the subway. Tickets can be purchased online or at any station kiosk. You will need your UAE residency card or passport to prove your identity.
One of the cheapest ways to get from one terminal to another, the subway is located at all three main terminals. This convenient mode of transportation is actually not as far as you may think. At just $1.30 for a trip in each direction, it’s not too pricey at all. The express subway stop is located at Terminal 3, directly in front of the main gates. You can also access this stop through the Skylink Skybus which costs just $2.10.
Buses: Dubai has one of the most extensive public transportation networks in the world. You can easily get from your hotel to the airport and to the beaches of the seven-star hotels located by the beachfront as well as it will take you to and from the airport in about 30 minutes.
The airport bus is perhaps the most convenient option. There are two bus stops outside the airport, which you can board from both day and night (but it is best to plan ahead). Each of these busses can hold up to 52 passengers. At each stop, there is an electronic reader which will read your seat number.
Once you are aboard, you will see the seat numbers ahead, so you can easily find your seat. Cost: A single ride is AED 16. It will take you anywhere within the city limits (including the beachfront).
These buses travel all around Dubai, including to and from the airport. At just 4 AED ($1.05) for a trip, it’s easy to pay the one-way fare on a bus.
Dubai flying taxi: While a future iteration of Uber’s uberAIR service is unlikely to arrive anytime soon, drone taxis are being considered to transport you from Dubai to other destinations, including Sharjah, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi.
However, this project has been limited by low regulations and bureaucracy, and it is also unlikely that Dubai will be the first to roll it out. As with any other flight, Dubai flying taxi would likely have a costly barrier to entry to the region, making it unlikely for it to become common.
